Piálek & Jäger Winery

We are a small winery that is built on the friendship between two families. We don’t rush our wines.
We give them as much time as they need – as we do with our children, so that we may be proud of them.

It is with passion, but also with a great deal of respect for the wine-making traditions of those who came before us, that we go about building our wines to the highest possible standards, without chemicals, using only the finest grapes. We strictly produce quality wines with special designations (“Prädikatsweine”) from the Znojmo sub-region, in unique small batches of around 3000 bottles.  The Znojmo wine-making sub-region provides exceptional conditions for the cultivation of grapevines, and in particular for the varieties within the VOC Znojmo appellation, an original certification whose demanding criteria are satisfied by our wines.  However, we also offer other varieties, and are the proud makers of the inimitable Sauvignon Kravák grand cru.  We cultivate our grapes to organic standards in our vineyards on Cow Hill (Kraví hora) and Načeratice Hill.

Geography

Geography

Our vineyards are stretched out in what is known as the Znojmo wine-making sub-region, in the south of Moravia, close to the Austrian border.  The earliest historical references to the cultivation of wine around Znojmo date back as far as the Roman Empire.

Climate

Climate

The climate around here, in the heartland, sheltered by the rain shadow of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, results in a longer vegetation period for grapevines, though the summer months are for the most part rather hot, doing wonders for the grapes’ late ripening.

Soil

Soil

The soils which are endemic to the Cow Hill and Načeratice Hill sites are sandy, with a moderately gravelly structure.  The underlying rocks are formed from old magmatic rocks, granite, gneiss, and granodiorites.

Grapes

Grapes

Thanks to their slow ripening, the grapes are chock-full with a dazzling variety of aromatics.  At the center of our interest are varieties which are typical for the Znojmo sub-region: Veltlínské zelené (Grüner Veltliner), Sauvignon, and Rhine Riesling.  With that said, we are also at the top of our game with other varieties such as Chardonnay, Hibernal, or Pálava.

Taste

Taste

All grapes cultivated in our vineyards share the common trait of a rather intense flavorfulness.  The natural and climatic conditions conspire to give our wine unmistakable zest, full-bodiedness, and minerality.

The wine-making process

The wine-making process

Our production is limited to bottled wine with special designations (“Prädikatsweine”) in small, one-of-a-kind batches.  We approach each wine individually.  Each wine gestates and matures for as long as it needs.

“Blue-blooded wine” overlay

“Blue-blooded wine”

Our family winery is proudly committed to traditions that go back to the 13th century. The coat-of-arms of the noble house of Piálek is found on each of our labels, along with the motto: “Blue-blooded wine”. We honor tradition, but at the same time are not averse to experimentation. We make wine with the honesty of artisans, to the best of our skills.
